JIVKO
Born in Bulgaria in 1963, Jivko began his fine arts training in his teens. Receiving his first lessons from his Uncle, Jivko’s genius was recognized early and he was admitted to the fine arts high school in the ancient Thracian capitol of Kazanlak. These first influences, amid the ruins and the modern, have inspired in Jivko’s work a love of the mythological figure.
Jivko went on to study at the Beaux-Arts Academy in Prague, where his first sculptures were shown to much critical acclaim earning him the highest title of “Academic Sculptor.” Upon graduation, Jivko began to show his works in Paris, where he received a grant from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. Just two years later, the sculptor was awarded the Association Renoir grant from some of today’s most influential critics. His career has followed this trajectory receiving continued praise and awards from across Europe.
Jivko’s sculptures explore the classical ideas of ephemera and metamorphosis. Using the permanence of bronze to create delicate details embedded in powerful imagery, there is a moment of revelation in every sculpture. Inspired by a balancing of the sensual and the brutal, like three-dimensional stories, each highly-textured piece invokes the allegories and legends of the human experience. Axelle Fine Arts is delighted to present the work of one of Europe’s most celebrated contemporary sculptors for his American debut.
